According to Nintenderos, Minecraft arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 27, and owners of the digital Switch version can get a free upgrade until Jan. 31, 2027, in most regions.

This is a short brief: the reporting is Nintenderos’s, and we had nothing to add yet. Read their story.

The Switch 2 release is listed as a 1.2 GB download. Owners can transfer their worlds and save data from the Switch version, so an existing build does not have to start over. The edition also includes enhanced lighting, shadows and water effects, plus the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, with 15 music tracks and 40 character skins.

Online multiplayer requires Nintendo Switch Online. Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account. Local split-screen play is supported, though those visual effects do not work with some split-screen modes and some Marketplace content.

What we don’t know

A free upgrade for owners of physical Switch copies has not been confirmed.

That’s the whole story. Back to the main quest.
