An unlit black lamp and a bowl of popcorn trapped in ice on a sunny kitchen counter.

PC Games Hardware reports that Nvidia has confirmed black screens and frozen video with the GeForce 621.01 driver. The problem can interrupt video playback when a game starts, and Nvidia has not given a fix date.

This is a short brief: the reporting is PC Games Hardware’s, and we had nothing to add yet. Read their story.

Several reports came from RTX 5080 owners. One RTX 4090 user said video on a second 4K monitor stutters while a game runs on the main screen. Reported problems also involve Chrome, Edge and VLC.

Nvidia is investigating and has asked affected users for diagnostic logs. Some users say returning to driver 617.42 fixes video playback, but that is not an official fix.

What we don’t know

Nvidia has not announced when it will release a corrected driver or which cards are affected.

That’s the whole story. Back to the main quest.
